GRAND FINALE MONDAY

The victorious duos from the Playoff Semifinals engage in a battle for the Collegiate Pigskin Championship National Honors. This climactic national title clash migrates to a different metropolis each annum, consistently unfolding on a Monday evening.

ALL-ENCOMPASSING ENTRÉE

Each Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) squad is accorded egalitarian access to the Collegiate Pigskin Championship contingent on their regular season performance. No team is granted an automatic berth.

OVERSIGHT

The custodianship of administrative affairs is in the hands of university presidents, chancellors representing all 10 FBS conferences, and Notre Dame, forming the board of managers. The event’s day-to-day operations are orchestrated by the Management Committee, featuring commissioners and Notre Dame’s athletics director, based in the CFP office situated in Irving, Texas.

ASSESSMENT CONSORTIUM

A cadre of 13 adept individuals characterized by high integrity, boasting backgrounds as coaches, student-athletes, collegiate administrators, and journalists, augmented by in-office athletics directors, forms the selection committee. The committee’s constituents include Mitch Barnhart, Tom Burman, Boo Corrigan (chair), Rick George, Chet Gladchuk, Jim Grobe, Warde Manuel, Will Shields, Gene Taylor, Joe Taylor, John Urschel, Rod West, and Kelly Whiteside.

MANDATE OF THE SELECTION PANEL

Systematically rank the elite 25 teams and allocate the foremost four to Playoff Semifinal venues. Delegate teams to the designated New Year’s bowls. Formulate engaging matchups. Strive to sidestep rematches from the regular season and recurring appearances in particular bowls. Factor in geographical considerations.

PARTICIPANTS IN THE NEW YEAR’S SIX BOWLS

Both contenders in the Orange, Rose, and Sugar bowls are contracted outside the playoff structure (Big Ten and Pac-12 to the Rose Bowl Game; SEC and Big 12 to the Sugar Bowl; ACC to the Orange Bowl against the top-ranked available team from the SEC, Big Ten, and Notre Dame).

In the event of a conference champion qualifying for the playoff, the bowl will select a substitute from that conference. Should these bowls host the Playoff Semifinals and their contracted conference champions fall short, the displaced champion(s) will partake in one of the other New Year’s bowls.

The selection committee will orchestrate the pairings based on the highest-ranked available teams.

CFP National Championship Trophy

The College Football Playoff National Championship Trophy is the ultimate goal of college football teams across the United States.

An ascending virtual football, the trophy’s handcrafted gold brackets surround a hardened steel core. The trophy was created to be raised in celebration of the highest level of team achievement in college football.

Designed by Pentagram, the trophy was commissioned by the CFP for the new playoff era. The design features a focused football at the center of the base that rises to form an actual-size ball. Standing at a total height of three feet, the trophy and base are two integral but separate pieces, so the trophy may be lifted up independently when it is awarded each year following the national championship game.

The trophy is handcrafted by the master fine art foundry UAP Polich Tallix. Expert craftsmen worked for three months, combining cutting edge technologies with timeless metal casting and finishing techniques to create the trophy.

Handmade from 24k gold, bronze, and stainless steel, the trophy is 26.5 inches tall. The base is formed from bronze with a hand-rubbed black patina finish and is 12 inches high.

CFP National Championship Rings

Each year, student-athletes, coaches and staff of the team that wins the CFP National Championship receive a national championship ring.

The rings, crafted by Jostens, are designed with input from the school that wins the title. The face of the ring says “National” on top and “Champions” on the bottom, surrounding a golden CFP football logo.

The words “College Football Playoff” frame the outside of the centerpiece. Each side is customized by the national champions, always including the score of the national championship game.
