The harrowing event transpired as a northbound No. 4 train arrived at the Mt. Eden subway station around 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
New York Police Department Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny revealed that the confrontation unfolded between two groups—one that boarded at 125th Street and another near Yankee Stadium. Both groups, as disclosed by the police, comprised teenagers.
As the train rolled into the station, tensions escalated from a verbal dispute to a physical altercation, ultimately culminating in gunfire inside the train car, Kenny stated.
Panic ensued as additional shots rang out on the platform, sending commuters scrambling for safety in the chaotic aftermath, as described by NYPD’s Chief of Transit Michael Kemper.
Frantic Response and Victims
Multiple 911 calls flooded in following the shooting, prompting a swift response from law enforcement. Police arrived on the scene promptly, discovering three victims on the platform and two others on the street.
The wounded encompassed individuals from both groups of teenagers and innocent bystanders, according to Kemper.
Among the casualties was a 35-year-old man, originally reported as 34, who succumbed to a gunshot wound to the chest. Hailing from Tehuacan, Mexico, the victim’s family is receiving support from Mexican officials, affirmed Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs Alicia Barcena.
The injured victims ranged from a 14-year-old girl with a foot injury to a 71-year-old man wounded in the thumb, Kenny outlined.
Hunt for Perpetrators
Presently, law enforcement is on the lookout for three shooters, having identified a person of interest affiliated with one of the gangs, Kenny announced. A law enforcement source disclosed that one of the assailants fled wearing a red jacket and ski mask.
Despite the gravity of the incident, Chief Kemper emphasized that such occurrences are not typical within the subway system, underscoring the relative safety of New York’s public transit. He further stressed the imperative of legal repercussions to deter future acts of violence.

Expressing profound dismay over the incident, Janno Lieber, chair and CEO of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, denounced the violence as unacceptable. “New York’s heart breaks,” Lieber lamented, emphasizing the toll such senseless acts exact on the community, particularly on commuters and schoolchildren.
Echoing Lieber’s sentiments, Tarik Sheppard, police deputy commissioner of public information, issued a stern warning to the perpetrators, branding them as the NYPD’s prime targets. “You are now NYPD’s most wanted,” Sheppard declared, urging the assailants to surrender as the authorities intensified their pursuit.
